LETTIE HARRISON

Moments later, Shaw found himself standing on the edge of a dark, wide hole in the ground, his hands and feet still bound, Randall standing behind him, holding on to Shaw’s arm.

On this occasion, however, the hole in the ground was no illusion, manifested by some drug Shaw had ingested.

“The thing about these old mines,” Randall whispered in Shaw’s ear, “is that they run all under the town and up into the foothills and are perfect for getting rid of bodies.”

Shaw’s toes shuffled along the edge of the yawning blackness, breaking away some of the loose earth that tumbled into the darkness.

Roy Dern and his daughter stood opposite the old mine shaft. Dern tilted his head at Shaw. “You said you wanted to know what happened to Lettie Harrison.” He stared down at the gaping hole. “Well, now you’re going to find out—firsthand.” He jerked his head at Randall.

Randall grabbed a fistful of Shaw’s hair, wrenching his head back.

Shaw could feel Randall’s hot, sickly breath on the side of his face.

“You know,” Randall crooned, his lips brushing Shaw’s cheek, “just before I pushed her in, I showed her what it felt like to have a real man inside h—”

With both hands tied behind his back, and his palms facing outwards, Shaw's fingers grabbed at the crotch of Randall’s trousers, and dug in as far and as deep as he could, latching on to the man’s groin through the thin fabric and pulling him forward with it. Where Randall’s genitals were going, the rest of him was coming along too, Shaw surmised. He took a step out into nothingness, dragging Randall by his balls with him.

“Nooo!” Randall screamed as they both plummeted together into the darkness below.

If Shaw was going to die, he was going make certain Randall died first.

As they fell through the blackness, Shaw twisted his hips, his hands still viselike on Randall’s genitalia, the deputy’s screams echoing and bouncing up the narrow shaft.

Suddenly Shaw was drowning, immersed in filmy, gritty stink-water, Randall behind him struggling, his arms and legs flailing. The mine shaft had been flooded, was full of water, and had broken their fall. They broke the surface together, wrestling, gasping, twisting like two eels entwined in each other’s limbs, Shaw’s grip on Randall’s manhood gone, while Randall had lost his gun in the fall.

With both his hands and feet bound, Shaw couldn't tread water and began to sink again, Randall pushing him down, too, on the top of his head. Ignoring his burning lungs, Shaw curled up into a ball below the surface, and hooked his bound hands under his butt and then over his heels, bringing them out in front of him. Now he had some mobility. He dolphin-kicked to the surface, then clubbed Randall in the side of the head with his bound fists.

Randall groaned and bobbed to the side.

Groping under the surface, Shaw searched Randall’s utility belt, his fingers hungrily clawing along it. The gun was gone. Flashlight? Useless. Handcuffs? Equally as useless.
